This piece was inspired by a recent trip
to mid wales. Having spent a couple of days exploring the countryside
and walking on the Breacon Hills I found myself gazing out over
the rolling hills which were the very life bloody of the local
economy, if you forget tourism for a moment. These hills were
the very instruments of a nation's health and welbeing and yet
my past few days had been engulfed with Welshness. Every turn
I made felt like the Welsh tourist board drawing me into some
attraction, folk tale, historical happening or gastronomic feast.
The whole experience which I was living through was full of another
culture, way of living, another focus which in part was being
fostered and generated by the Welsh Tourist board. The National
Identity was being focussed in each place I enetered or gazed
upon. As I sat on the hillside in the heavily clouded sky I felt
as if I could hear the words of this Welsh National identity being
sung by the very fields themselves. Claiming their own powerful
grasp over past and future generations.
With these thoughts in mind I began to take a closer look at the
Welsh National Anthem, to analyse the score and work with both
the music and the fields. Here in this protopiece we see the fields
singing the notes of the National Anthem, as if cascading and
rolling through the whole of the Welsh economy.
